USS Indianapolis Reunion This Weekend In Indy
(INDIANAPOLIS) - The survivors of the USS Indianapolis, a ship that delivered the parts for the atomic bombs that were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, are in Indianapolis, Indiana this weekend for a reunion.
The ship was torpedoed after it delivered the parts and only 316 men survived. Among them, Paul McGinnis and Sam Lopez from West Virginia and Harold Bray from California.
Lopez says they were found after several days of drifting in the pacific but the conditions were horrific.
McGinnis says he'd love to go back into the Pacific Ocean on a Navy ship, just to see the sunrise. He says, "it's just gorgeous" and says the sky changes from pink to blue as the day goes along.
The USSS Indianapolis Gallery will have its grand opening this weekend at the Indiana War Memorial. A parade is also set for Saturday as well.
