Three Counties Allow Property Tax Rewind
(INDIANAPOLIS) - Three more Indiana counties will allow property owners to pay their 2007 property taxes at the 2006 level, while the county performs a state-ordered do-over of reassessment.
Governor Mitch Daniels says Gibson, Posey, and Delaware counties have the same suspicious data as Marion County, with business property values mostly unchanged from six years ago. Daniels ordered a fresh Marion County reassessment last week.
Daniels says the state still doesn't have enough data from 71 counties to determine whether new assessments are needed. He says he continues to work on a circuit breaker concept that would cap property tax bills at a reasonable and affordable level.
The governor has said he likes the idea of abolishing property taxes entirely, but only if the numbers work in such a way that other taxes wouldn't reach crushing levels to make up for it.
