Indiana Lakes Get Once Over
(BLOOMINGTON) - What is the real status of the nation’s lakes?
Professor Bill Jones of Indiana University'S School of Public and Environmental Affairs is leading a team of researchers studying 50 lakes in Indiana, as part of a survey of lake conditions nationwide. The research is sponsored by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
The information will be used to assess the health of lake waters, evaluate the effectiveness of protection and restoration efforts, and suggest future actions to prevent pollution.
The Indiana effort, which began last month, is being coordinated through the Indiana Department of Environmental Management. Results from the lower 48 states will be compiled in a 2009 report on the "Survey of the Nation's Lakes."
Jones says the survey will serve as a scientific report card indicating the number of lakes that are in good, fair or poor condition.
