Daniels Throws Out Marion County Reassessment

(UNDATED) - Indiana city leaders are applauding Governor Daniels’ announcement he’ll throw out Marion County’s reassessment, and may do the same in other counties.

Indianapolis Mayor Bart Peterson says a new reassessment is "exactly the right thing to do."

Indiana Association of Cities and Towns Executive Director Matt Greller says he's glad Daniels recognized tax bills are a problem around the state, not just in Marion County.

Greller says a new reassessment could mean delays in cities and towns receiving their share of tax money. He says that could force some counties to take short-term loans to tide them over, but says he expects most mayors will consider that well worth it.

Daniels says Gibson County appears to have made the same error Marion County did, with assessors failing to adjust values for most business and industrial properties.

He says all counties' data will be examined, but only 18 counties have turned in their numbers so far.

Greller says IACT also supports Daniels' formation of a commission to consider the elimination of some layers of local government.

Greller says it's too soon to say which government units should be abolished, but says it's time to address the issue.
