Daniels Announces Plan To Abolish Property Taxes
(INDIANAPOLIS) - Governor Mitch Daniels says he might advocate the abolition of property taxes if Indiana increased the state income tax by one percent and the state sales tax by two.
Speaking on an Indianapolis radio talk show, Daniels said the elimination of property taxes would carry some positive benefits, including the increase of property values.
Daniels is blaming the many layers of local government for the property tax spike in Indiana, and says he's committed to finding relief. The governor has indicated he's leaning toward calling a special session to address property taxes.
Senate leaders this morning joined House Speaker Patrick Bauer in saying there's nothing a special session could accomplish that can't be done better when the regular session begins in four months.
