(WEST LAFAYETTE) - Two aviation technology students from Purdue are taking flight Tuesday during a special competition for female pilots.

Seniors Katie Sparrow and Marie Janus will represent Purdue in the 31st annual all-female air race classic.

This year's race between 47 teams begins in Oklahoma City and covers more than 2,500 miles.

The air race classic is the longest-running all-female airplane race in the world. Its roots date back more than 70 years with former pilots such as Amelia Earhart and Ruth Elder.
