State Areas Need More Rain

(UNDATED) - A weekend of steady rain should be enough to pull much of the state out of a drought, but Southern and Southwestern Indiana are still waiting for relief.

State Climatologist Dev Niyogi says Northern Indiana got exactly what it needed -- two inches of rain, and not in one big downpour, but a steady soaking through the weekend. Niyogi says that should be enough to bring the dry conditions to an end.

As long as temperatures remain steady, the evaporation of water from saturated soil will create a cloud cover, which will lead to a fresh round of showers. Niyogi says it takes at least an inch of rain to trigger that cycle. Southern Indiana and some areas east of Indianapolis didn't get that.

And niyogi says weather patterns have been spotty, with some drought areas within the same county as areas getting the isolated showers they need.
