Peterson Wants Special Property Tax Session

(INDIANAPOLIS) - Indianapolis Mayor Bart Peterson is asking on Governor Mitch Daniels to call a special session to address property taxes.

Peterson says the general assembly missed the ball in during the regular session to give property tax relief to Marion County as well as the entire state.

The mayor's proposal includes moving the costs of child welfare back to the 60-million dollar annual allotment of 2005 from the current 100-million dollars, passing the "Indyworks" township government consolidation plan, and lifting the freeze on the property tax replacement credits.

The city estimates those three items alone would save Marion County tax payers 88 million dollars.

Peterson spoke with a member of the governor's staff, but has not spoken with him directly.

Peterson says the property tax issue is a lot bigger than anyone anticipated and something must be done. He says he is willing to "take the political heat" for proposing a raise in income taxes to fight crime and the state must consider the same to bring relief to property tax payers.
