Out-Of-State Boaters Will Have It Easier

(INDIANAPOLIS) - Indiana Conservation officers will begin enforcing a new state law which actually went into effect last year.

Any non-resident boat owner with an out-of-state registration must pay Indiana excise tax if the boat has been in Indiana for more than three weeks in a row. A one-year grace period is now over.

In the past, boat owners were given 60 days to title and register their boats with the Bureau of Motor Vehicles. Conservation officers say the new law allows these owners the option of continuing with an out of state registration, provided they pay the state excise tax.

Boaters who own or rent lakefront property are exempt from registering the boat in Indiana, but they have to pay the excise tax, too.

Conservation officers say many boat owners were hesitant to comply with the old law, because it usually forced the owner to physically change the registration number on the boat, which can be expensive.
