New State Laws Take Effect
(UNDATED) - Sunday is new year’s day — at least from the state’s perspective.
It's the start of the new fiscal year, which makes it the effective date for most new state laws -- including a few which have slid under the radar.
You probably know cigarette taxes are going up 44.5 cents a pack. But even the governor said he was surprised by an $10 increase in motorcycle registration fees.
And starting this year, senior citizen fishing licenses are no longer free. Department of Natural Resources Spokeswoman Angela Goldman says they'll cost three bucks.
The state has banned self-service cigarette displays, and ordered landlords to change apartment locks at the tenant's expense on request if there are allegations of domestic violence.
Schools will no longer test students for curvature of the spine, or scoliosis.
