Court Denies Cop-Killer's Appeal
(INDIANAPOLIS) - Indiana’s parole board has recommended a Muncie cop-killer’s execution go forward next Friday as scheduled.
The parole board voted 3-0 against Michael Lambert's plea for clemency. Chairman Richard Malloy and board member William Harris abstained. Neither was on the board when the clemency hearing was held two years ago.
The board was hours away from its vote then when the federal appeals court in Chicago stayed Lambert's execution. The court has since rejected Lambert's appeal, and attorneys for both sides agreed the parole board could review written comments and tapes of the 2005 hearing, rather than start from scratch.
Lambert was convicted of shooting Muncie patrolman Gregg Winters five times in the back of the head as winters was driving him to jail on a charge of public intoxication in 1990.
All three board members voting declared they couldn't think of a single reason even to consider clemency. Board members Randall Gentry and Valerie Parker both referred to the shooting as "an execution."
