Carter Wants Benefits For Slain Officers
(MUNCIE) - Indiana Attorney General Steve Carter and the widow of a slain Muncie police officer are stressing the importance of protecting the rights of victims’ families in capital punishment cases.
With her husband's killer scheduled to be executed this Friday, Molly Winters hopes the case will encourage Indiana lawmakers to provide more support to those families of fallen police officers.
When her husband Greg Winters was gunned down in 1990, the state paid $50,000 dollars to the families of officers killed in the line of duty. The state has since tripled the benefit to $150,000 dollars--an upward trend winters believes should continue.
Winters and Carter are now pushing for guaranteed insurance benefits to survivors of town marshals and excise, housing, and school police killed on the job.
Michael Lambert is scheduled to die by injection early Friday at the Indiana State Prison.
The Indiana Parole Board last week recommended that Gov. Mitch Daniels not grant Lambert clemency.
