Tracks Decide Where To Place Slots

(STATEHOUSE) - For Indiana’s horse-racing tracks, the hard part is over: Governor Daniels last week signed the law letting them install slot machines.

But Hoosier Park in Anderson and Indiana Downs in Shelby County still need to decide what form that will take. Hoosier Park President Rick Moore says his track will install the maximum two-thousand slot machines allowed by law, and wants to set things up so you can still watch and bet on the races while you play.

But there's been no decision on whether to install the machines in the existing betting area or construct a new slots pavilion, nor on whether a slots building should be temporary or permanent, much less how that building should be designed.

Past attempts to push a slots bill through the legislature have died quick deaths.

Moore says Hoosier Park didn't want to be "presumptuous" and start making plans until the bill had passed. Even the timing is up in the air. The slots law took effect the moment Daniels signed it.

But along with the tracks building whatever they decide to build, the Indiana Gaming Commission still needs to draft specific regulations, and approve the tracks' licenses.
