Safe Snatched From Indy BMV

(INDIANAPOLIS) - Was it an inside job? Bureau of Motor Vehicles officials say they aren’t sure how the suspect or suspects were able to break into the Indy West BMV branch.

Metro police say it happened early Wednesday morning. BMV Commissioner Ron Stiver says anyone who wrote a check at that branch on Tuesday needs to contact their bank and stop payment and then write the BMV a new check.

It appears the thieves got away with tens of thousands in cash, along with hundreds of checks.

Police say the surveillance tapes were tampered with and whoever did this was able to get a several hundred pound safe out of the building in a matter of a few minutes.

Stiver says they are analyzing security measures for BMV branches around the state.

Monty Combs heads up security for the BMV and says the suspects were able to get past the security door that protects the safe by breaking the door, which has a key code.

Combs also says the 15th is typically a heavy business day for the BMV, with the way the state's systems are set up.

Indy West is one of the largest BMVbranches in the state. It will re-open for business today.
