Police Take Steps To Conserve Fuel

(UNDATED) - Police departments are doing their best to cut back on gasoline consumption.

Indianapolis Metro Police have been told to "be mindful of gas consumption" and don't leave their cars idling, both while taking reports and when doing things like watching for speeders.

Sergeant Matt Mount says just because gas prices are higher doesn't mean they're going to cut back on public safety.

Indiana State Police First Sergeant Dave Bursten says they've asked officers to only gas up at state owned facilities, which do not have the gas tax in place, as opposed to using fleet credit cards at regular service stations.

Bursten also says they've advised officers to turn off their engines when running radar.
