(INDIANAPOLIS) - Governor Mitch Daniels says he denied David Leon Woods’ petition for clemency after reviewing the case.

Woods was sentenced to death in 1985 for the murder of Juan Placencia in 1984. The death row inmate was executed just after midnight Friday at the Indiana State Prison in Michigan City.

The execution is the first since enactment of a law guaranteeing the victim's relatives the right to witness it. Five of Juan Placencia's 12 children made the trip to Michigan City from as far away as California to see David Woods put to death after 23 years. Until last year, it would have been up to Woods to decide who was allowed in the death chamber.
