Elementary Student Writes Grant For Butterflies

(BROWNSBURG) - Brownsburg will cut the ribbon Sunday on a rest stop for monarch butterflies.

Monarch butterflies are not an endangered species, but their numbers have fallen in recent years as farmers and gardeners have tried to eradicate milkweed, the plant the butterflies eat and lay their eggs on.

Third and fifth-graders at White Lick Elementary in Brownsburg decided to follow the lead of other communities which have planted milkweed at "way stations" along the butterflies' migratory path. Eleven-year-old Page Caito led the project, writing a grant which brought in $4,400 to build the way station in Arbuckle Park, then hitting up local businesses for more help.
