Social Security Scam Hits Hoosier Seniors

(UNDATED) - An Indiana agency that works to protect the rights of seniors is issuing a warning about the latest scam to separate them from their money.

IAAAA CEO Melissa Durr says a woman in Lagrange county received a phone call from a person who claimed to be from social security. The female scam artist told the victim she had been approved for a $5,000 dollar grant. The caller then requested the last four digits of the senior's social security number, as well as her bank account number.

Durr says Social Security never contacts individuals over the phone.

To report suspected scams, you can contact your area agency on aging by calling 1-800-986-3505. The AAA claims one in ten Americans falls victim to fraud in his or her lifetime.
