Interstate 69 Extension To Cost More Than Thought
(UNDATED) - New figures show that building the southernmost part of the Interstate 69 extension may cost nearly twice as much as planners thought. Transportation officials say they expected a rise in cost due to increasing construction prices.
The 142-mile project stretching from Indianapolis to Evansville was given a price tag of 122 million in 2000. A new federal environmental study of that section puts the price at 230 million.
Opponents of the highway project say this is evidence that the state will not be able to pay for the extensions. Indiana Department of Transportation officials say enough money has been earmarked to pay for the project.
Work on the first leg... a 13-mile stretch from Evansville to Oakland City...is slated to begin next year.
