Indiana Soliders Ready For Deployment
(UNDATED) - About 3,400 Indiana National Guard soldiers are preparing for possible deployment to Iraq.
The U.S. Department of Defense confirms the Indianapolis-based 76th infantry brigade will join troops from Ohio, Oklahoma, and Arkansas in potentially heading overseas in December for up to one year.
The units would serve as replacement forces in the regular rotation, and would not be a tied to the recent military buildup for security operations in Baghdad.
Indiana National Guard spokeswoman Deedra Thombleson has already served two tours in Iraq and says soldiers and their families need time to get ready for the mission at hand. She says troops experience emotions ranging from excitement to uncertainty.
The final decision on whether the local brigade will deploy will be made based on conditions on the ground in Iraq.
The Bedford National Guard Armory would be involved with the deployment if it occurs.
