Reward For Getting Guns Off Streets
(INDIANAPOLIS) - Indianapolis Metro Police have announced a plan to pay people to help get illegal guns off the streets.
Sheriff Frank Anderson says $100,000 dollars from the jail commissary fund will be donated to help with the plan.
When an individual calls crime stoppers with a tip that leads to an arrest of a person who possesses an illegal firearm, they will receive a 500 dollar reward, but the gun must be recovered by police to receive the award.
Anderson says last year about 88 percent of homicides in Indianapolis involved guns. Because Crime Stoppers is involved, the people who give the tips remain anonymous.
Anderson also says confiscated guns will not be resold, but rather destroyed.
