(ANDERSON) - Saint John’s Health System in Anderson this week becomes the first institution in Indiana to use a new technology to help smokers kick the habit.

The Acucore Technology uses a "faux cigarette" that releases the taste of a cigarette and is used for nicotine replacement therapy. It also gives smokers the feel of smoking, without the smoke.

Saint John's Health System says smoking results in $1.9-billion in Indiana health care costs annually and Medicaid expenditures directly related to tobacco total $448-million.
