Slot Machine Bill Needs Spending Plan, Say Senate Leaders

(STATEHOUSE) - Senate leaders say a bill allowing slot machines at horse-racing tracks will need a plan for spending the money to make much headway in the Chamber.

Bills to allow slots have never even gotten a hearing in the senate. Former President Pro Tem Robert Garton (R-Columbus) and Senate Finance Chairman Larry Borst routinely blocked such measures.

Garton and Borst are gone from the Senate now after election defeats, and new President Pro Tem David Long says the bill deserves at least a hearing if it makes it out of the house.

But Long says senators should demand a concrete plan for how the state would spend its cut, rather than just dumping the money into the general fund.
