Wimax Testing At Ball State

(MUNCIE) - Ball State University is among the first places in the country to test the next generation of wireless internet technology.

Ball State has a six-month experimental license from the FCC to test what's called Wimax. Wimax has a considerably longer range than standard Wi-Fi. Normal wireless internet typically has a range of about 15-hundred feet. Wimax has an estimated range of 30 miles.

It's believed that once Wimax becomes commonplace, the entire United States could be supplied with wireless internet. Researchers at Ball State are determining how well Wimax penetrates buildings, trees and terrain and what effect weather will have on the signal. Equipment that uses both U.S. and European standards is being tested.
