(UNDATED) - Several state parks will be closed today and tomorrow during special hunts to reduce the deer population.

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources will close a total of 18 properties throughout the state as volunteers comb the state parks and nature preserves for their targets. DNR Resource Specialist Jim Gerbracht says deer in the 18 areas have grown too large to have enough food during the winter.

Without the special hunts, several deer would starve to death. The Indiana DNR began the reduction hunts in 1993 as a way to maintain ecological balance in the parks.
