(CAMP ATTERBURY) - Indiana’s year-old state-of-the-art military training center at Camp Atterbury could also be an emergency state capital in case of disaster.

The Joint Simulation Training Exercise Center is big enough for field training of guardsmen, reservists, and other troops preparing for active duty.

It has computer simulations of situations it can't duplicate in real life, what director Ed Collins calls "X-Box on steroids." But its electronics also would enable a core group of officials to run state government if disaster struck Indianapolis...with voice, video and data transmission capability running off an independent power source.

Collins notes Louisiana deployed its own continuity-of-government plan during Katrina, moving a state disaster headquarters in New Orleans further north.
