Mastodon Bones Discovered In Indiana

(PLYMOUTH) - The bones of a female mastodon are seeing light for the first time in 12,000 years in northern Indiana.
A crew from the Indiana State Museum has unearthed parts of the prehistoric creature near Plymouth.
Chief curator of Natural History Ronald Richards says buried spruce cones from trees no longer found in Indiana indicate the mastodon probably died 12,000 years ago.
The bones will be cleaned, radio carbon-dated, and taken to the state museum in Indianapolis for a future exhibit on elephant graveyards.
The display will contain mastodon bones from at least 12 dig sites throughout the state.
