Highway Sniper Kills Man, Injures Another
Police are investigating a series of shootings on two interstates near Seymour and Redkey.
The shootings, which occured shortly after midnight on Sunday, resulted in one death and one injury in the Seymour area.
Killed was 40-year-old Jerry L. Ross of New Albany. Treated and released for injuries in the second shooting was 25-year-old Robert Otto Hartl of Audubon, Iowa. The two shooting events in the Redkey area did not result in any injuries.
Officials say the shots were fired into vehicles on the interstates and appeared to have come from an overpass or an area on the side of the road. State Police held a news conference Sunday night and at that time it had not been determined if the Seymour and Redkey shooting events were connected. Based on the serious nature of the events, which resulted in loss of life, the Indiana State Police say they will treat the incidents as being connected until proven otherwise.
To aid in the investigation the Superintendent of the state police, Dr. Paul E. Whitesell, has assembled a task force that will lead the investigation with assistance from other federal, county and local law enforcement agencies. Additionally, Governor Mitch Daniels has committed resources from the Indiana National Guard as well as the Indiana Department of Homeland Security to provide any assistance as needed.
Authorities say assistance from the public will be a critical part of the ongoing investigation. Anyone with information relating to either of the shootings is asked to call the Task Force Hotline at (800) 622-4962. People with tips calling from outside of Indiana should call (317) 232-8250.
