(UNDATED) - According to the State Department of Natural Resources, boating accidents and safety violations increase along with warmer weather.

Indiana Conservation officers are investigating the death of a five-year-old boy who was apparently killed Saturday after being struck by a boat when he fell off an inner tube in Cataract Lake.

Lt. Tony Stoll says his district in southeastern Indiana issues more tickets along the Ohio River during the July 4th holiday. He says many drivers choose to operate their boats and other watercraft while under the influence of alcohol. Stoll also tickets boaters for failing to wear life jackets.

The District 9 Commander encourages boaters to follow speed limits and keep their watercraft well-lit after dark to avoid accidents.
