(MADISON) - Indiana’s first college and former Underground Railroad stop in Madison is undergoing a major makeover as part of an effort to restore one of America’s most endangered historic places.

More than 15 volunteers from Hampton Hotels' "Save A Landmark" program traveled to Eleutherian College to help clean, paint, and landscape the grounds.

Hampton Hotels Vice President Judy Christa-Cathey says the monument was one of the first colleges in pre-civil war America to admit students regardless of gender or race.

The former school, built in 1848, also served as a station on the Underground Railroad.

Hampton Hotels will contribute $10,000 and about 160 hours of manpower to help fix the landmark.
