(INDIANAPOLIS) - The annual State Police memorial service for 42 troopers killed in the line of duty was held in Indianapolis this past Thursday.

A bugler played taps outside the statehouse as four rows of uniformed troopers lined up and saluted. Civilians were seen placing their hands over their hearts in respect.

State Police say the tribute is held to ensure the fallen are remembered. Robert Lather, whose son Robert Lather Jr., was killed 24 years ago in a police chase, says the tribute is important for the living as well.

Indiana hasn't lost a trooper since 2003, when Scott Patrick was shot to death on I-80 in Gary.
