(COLUMBUS) - A POW/MIA memorial in Columbus has been dedicated to departing Senate President Pro Tem Robert Garton.

Mayor Fred Armstrong says the idea came up after Garton's upset loss in this month's Republican Primary ended a 36-year legislative career, the last 26 as head of the Senate.

Armstrong says the surprise dedication was the least the city could do to thank the Columbus Republican for years of government and military service.

A memorial was also dedicated to Dennis Chomel, the only Bartholomew County soldier still missing in action in Vietnam.
