DNR Study Deaths Of Local Birds

(ODEN) - Department of Natural Resources officials are blaming cool, wet weather and a lack of insects for the deaths of several birds around the southern Indiana town of Odon.

DNR spokesman Russ Grunden says many purple martins have been found dead from apparent starvation.

Grunden says the martins, which eat only flying bugs, weren't strong enough to survive several days without food.

The recent rains apparently washed out the breeding areas for insects, slowing their development.

Grunden says the deaths of the weaker birds is a natural phenomenon.
