Nerve Gas Spills From Wastewater

(NEWPORT) - The commander of the Newport Chemical Depot says a 300-gallon spill of wastewater from the destruction of VX nerve gas Tuesday was caused by a drain plug that popped out when workers were trying to tighten it.
Lt. Col. Scott Kimmell says two employees were performing maintenance on a mixer-reactor when the leak happened. The liquid poured onto a sealed concrete floor and into a sump designed to contain liquid. The wastewater had already been cleared of all detectable nerve agent.
No one was injured. Parsons, the company contracted to detroy the nerve agent stockpile, is continuing an investigation into the incident.
