Statehouse Receives Envelope With White Powder
STATEHOUSE—The Indiana Statehouse has reopened following a brief scare yesterday which began in the House Speaker’s office.
Speaker Brian Bosma says has assistant opened an envelope which contained an unknown white powdery substance. Bosma's assistant was isolated for a time.
Homeland Security Director Eric Dietz says no one was being let inside or out. Dietz says they wanted to ensure that this wasn't a substance which could be spread through the air.
The substance has been removed from the building and is now in the hands of the F.B.I. which is expected to take until Friday to finish testing.
Bosma says they will review protocol for handling mail, but says he believes current procedure is what it's supposed to be.
A second suspicious envelope which may have contained the same powder was caught in the mail room. Its intended recipient is unclear.
