IRS Warning Of Three Hoosier Taxpayer Scams

INDIANAPOLIS—As tax day looms ever closer, the Indianapolis office of the Internal Revenue Service is warning Hoosiers about three taxpayer scams it’s seeing in Indiana.

Pat Brummer at the Indianapolis office says the first one is a variation on a common internet scam known as phishing. She says the scam artist sends an email that appears very authentic, saying the taxpayer is owed a refund and needs to log on to teh "Where's My Refund" website. Victims then go to a website that appeats to be at the IRS, where they're asked for personal financial information that the perpetrators use for identity theft.

Other scams involve a few unscrupulous tax preparers, who may steal information or ask the taxpayer to join them in an IRS scam.

Brummer says the third scam is books that claim to tell people who to avoid paying all taxes through schemes that are struck down in court.
