Students Can Now Enter National Law Day Essay Contest

(UNDATED) - The National Center for State Courts is once again sponsoring a contest for elementary, middle, and high school students in recognition of Law Day on May 1, 2019.

Each age group is asked to answer the following essay question - Should there be limits to free speech? Why or why not?

The essay must be 100 words or less and can by typed and entered online or handwritten can be submitted by mail to:

The following prizes will be awarded:

High School
1st Place - $500
2nd Place - $300
3rd Place - $250

Middle School
1st Place - $350
2nd Place - $200
3rd Place - $100

Elementary School
1st Place - $200
2nd Place - $150
3rd Place - $100

The deadline to submit an entry is Feb. 22, 2019. Winner will be notified on April 19 via email or phone.


Last year students were asked to answer why the founding fathers created three branches of government. Indiana had more participants than any other state and came away with three winners!

For the 3rd - 5th grade division, Raquel Atkins from Glen Park Academy in Gary won first place with an entry that included pictures. Seth Morris from Sugar Creek Consolidated in Terre Haute came in third with an entry about the separation of powers.

For the high school division, Randi Mincy from Harrison High School in Evansville won first place with an entry that reflected on lessons the founding fathers learned under British rule.
