(INDIANAPOLIS) - Officials say another round of hunting is needed to curtail the deer population at Eagle Creek Park in Indianapolis.
The Indianapolis Star reports the Indy Parks and Recreation department is backing the hunt, which is likely to begin early next year. It will be the fourth hunt since 2014.
More than 500 deer have already been killed during the previous hunts, but experts say the numbers still are higher than they should be to protect plant life and preserve habitats for other animals. The newspaper says as many as 100 deer are likely to be harvested during the upcoming hunt.
Past hunts have drawn opposition, including a lawsuit to stop the first deer cull, and a vetoed ordinance that would have required the City-County Council approval for the hunts.
