(FORT WAYNE) - A Fort Wayne man has been sentenced to 50 years in prison for killing his wife by cutting her neck with a machete.
Forty-seven-year-old Julio Rodriguez was sentenced Thursday. He had pleaded guilty to murder in November in 41-year-old Lucia Aviles Segura's killing.
The Journal Gazette reports that officers were called to the family's home early on May 30 and found Segura dead in the basement and a blood-covered knife blade.
Rodriguez told police that he was in the basement gathering clothes for work when he and Segura began arguing. He said that he grabbed the machete and accidentally cut her neck twice.
He was charged with murder the next day.
A probable cause affidavit says the couple's 16-year-old son was home at the time of the slaying.
