Last updated on Thursday, November 1, 2018

(INDIANAPOLIS) - Two new exhibits at the Indiana State Library showcase the history of medicine and the inevitability of death.

"The Practice of Medicine" in the first floor Exhibit Hall looks at the advancement of medical knowledge and the education of physicians and allied health professionals from the nineteenth century onward.

Topics ranging from pharmacology to hospitals to women's contributions to medicine are presented.

Rare examples of early 1800s American medical texts from the Indiana State Library's historical print collections are on display. The medicine exhibit features artifacts on loan from the Indiana Medical History Museum, including medicine bottles, instruments, and a doctor's saddlebags.

The second floor Great Hall exhibit, "The Business of Death," contemplates mortality. Items displayed from the library's collections cover subject matter about cemeteries, death records, funeral homes, and mortuary science.

Both exhibits are free and open to the public during regular business hours and will remain on display through January 2019. The Indiana State Library is located at 315 W. Ohio St. in downtown Indianapolis.
