Indianapolis Colts And Jump IN For Healthy Kids Announce Jump Right UP, A Wellness Partnership With Local School Districts

Last updated on Tuesday, November 13, 2018

(INDIANAPOLIS) - The Indianapolis Colts and Jump IN for Healthy Kids today announced the formation of Jump Right UP, a new partnership to improve the health of kids in four Indianapolis school districts: Indianapolis Public Schools and Lawrence, Pike, and Warren townships.

Goals of the partnership include: establishing best practices around physical activity and nutrition, such as 30 minutes of physical activity every day; implementing a healthy celebration and vending policy; and engaging with the school community to establish a culture of health and wellness.

The Colts awarded Jump IN a two-year grant to work with 35 schools to implement wellness policies and programs, impacting 23,000 students and helping schools to meet their health and wellness goals.

Schools that compete to meet or exceed their wellness goals will be eligible for rewards that could include visits by Colts mascot "Blue" or the Colts cheerleaders.

"The physical health of our young people is directly connected to the economic, educational and cultural health of our entire city and state," said Kalen Jackson, Colts vice-chair and owner and a member of Jump IN's Leadership Council. "It's vitally important for schools, parents and anyone who works with young people to encourage healthy lifestyles and activities that keep kids active, and the Colts are honored to be a part of this effort."

IPS has created a new wellness position as part of its commitment to student wellness and the Jump Right UP program. This week, current Shortridge High School athletic director Kathy Langdon will transition to the role of district PE/Health coach taking the district's commitment to student health and wellness to a new level.

Jump IN for Healthy Kids is dedicated to improving children's health and wellness in central Indiana. Childhood overweight and obesity is a growing problem and has more than doubled in children and quadrupled in adolescents in the past 30 years. If strong measures are not taken to reduce it, central Indiana is on track to have a 53% childhood overweight and obesity rate by 2025.

Jump Right UP is one of many projects Jump IN for Healthy Kids is working on to create healthy places, neighborhoods, and communities where kids and families have real opportunities to make healthy choices. For more information, please visit https://www.jumpinforhealthykids.org/healthy-places/
