I-64 Cable Rail Installation Slated To Begin Monday On I-64

Last updated on Thursday, November 29, 2018

(UNDATED) - Indiana Department of Transportation’s contractor for a $2 million cable barrier rail system project that spans sections of Interstate 64 in Crawford, Floyd and Harrison Counties plans to begin installation activities next Monday (DEC 3).

Construction signage is currently being placed at work sites.

Action Traffic Maintenance, the state's contractor, will pour concrete foundations for line hole posts and end anchors along I-64 between State Road 66 at Carefree and Farnsley Road near Carefree before taking a brief Christmas/winter hiatus. Operations will resume after the first of the year.

INDOT officials anticipate all 3/4-inch pre-stressed cable rail runs will be in place by the end of May.

These high-tension "wire rope" cable rails prevent almost all cross-median crashes by catching and capturing vehicles crossing median areas of a divided highway.

Motorists should expect inside shoulder closures and occasional left lane restrictions during installation operations.
