FDA Revokes Six Cancer-Causing Additives

Last updated on Sunday, October 7, 2018

(WASHINGTON) - The FDA is revoking the use of six food additives after data showed they caused cancer in lab animals.

The agency released a statement Friday saying companies who use the six additives will have 24 months to identify suitable replacements in food products.

The FDA action was in response to a 2016 petition and lawsuit by environmental groups and food safety experts.

The Center for Science in the Public Interest said the additives have been commonly used in candy, ice cream, chewing gum, baked goods, drinks and other foods since 1964.
