Emerging Artists In The Spotlight At Governor's Arts Awards

Last updated on Monday, October 1, 2018

(FORT WAYNE) - The Indiana Arts Commission (IAC) announced today that emerging talent will be showcased at the 2018 Governor’s Arts Awards, Friday, October 19, 2018, at Sweetwater Sound, Inc., in Fort Wayne.

Local musical talent from the Fort Wayne area will include performances by Addison Agen, 2017 first runner-up on the NBC talent competition The Voice, and the Fort Wayne Voices of Unity Youth Choir.

Agen will perform two songs, "No Way Out," and the title track from her forthcoming album "Who I Am." Voices of Unity Youth Choir will perform "Not Too Late to Dream," "You and Me," and "Breaking Free."

In addition to the individual performances, Agen will join Voices of Unity Youth Choir for the finale performance of "Have a Little Faith in Me," by Hoosier singer/songwriter John Hiatt, a 2013 Governor's Arts Award recipient.

"We are very excited to include young, emerging talent during the awards program," said IAC Executive Director Lewis C. Ricci. "While the awards traditionally recognize well-established contributions in the arts, we know the importance of encouraging and supporting young Hoosier creative talent."

Members of the Indiana University Dance Ensemble will perform an excerpt from "Deuce Coupe," a dance piece based on the music of The Beach Boys, choreographed by 2018 Governor's Arts Award recipient Twyla Tharp. Formerly from Portland, Indiana, Ms. Tharp has recently been working in partnership with the university's dance program to develop leading-edge technology that will transform dance instruction.

Prior to accepting her Governor's Arts Award, Ms. Tharp will also take part in an afternoon discussion session with Indiana University First Lady and Indiana Arts Commissioner Laurie Burns McRobbie during the Indiana Arts Homecoming at the Fort Wayne Arts Campus. The Governor's Arts Awards will be the closing event for the two-day conference.

"We are so honored that Ms. Tharp has agreed to be part of the Indiana Arts Homecoming, and know her contribution to the discussion will be of great interest to our attendees," Ricci added.

The Indiana Arts Homecoming will take place October 18 - 19, 2018 at the Arts United Arts Campus in downtown Fort Wayne, Indiana. Visit www.in.gov/arts/3070.htm for more information about the awards, including how to purchase tickets.

The Indiana Arts Commission is dedicated to the vision of the arts everywhere, every day, for everyone in Indiana.
