(SOUTH BEND) - A South Bend police officer will learn in November whether he’ll be fired for a patrol car crash that killed a young mother.
South Bend's Board of Public Safety scheduled a Nov. 5-6 hearing Wednesday to review evidence and allow Officer Justin Gorny to plead his case.
The five-person board will then vote on what action to take. The panel can vote to fire Gorny, suspend him or take no action.
Gorny was driving about 90 mph while responding to a reckless motorist call when he ran a red light July 20 and crashed into a car. Twenty-two-year-old Erica Flores, a mother of two young daughters, was killed.
A grand jury opted not to indict Gorny in the crash, but South Bend's police chief has recommended that Gorny be fired.
