(LOGANSPORT) - A British-based energy company has pulled the plug on a northern Indiana wind farm that would have generated 600 megawatts of electricity.
Renewable Energy Systems on Tuesday dropped its proposal for the Harvest Wind Energy project, which called for between 150 and 225 wind turbines in Cass and Miami counties.
The Pharos-Tribune reports the company cited changes to the project's "technical circumstances" for its decision.
The project's opponents have sought wider buffer zones between the turbines and landowners not participating in the project, citing safety, property rights and quality-of-life issues.
Lora Redweik is a wind farm opponent in Cass County. She called the company's announcement "fabulous news."
Cass County Commissioners President Jim Sailors says the canceled project would have earned participating residents about $90 million in lease payments.
