(INDIANAPOLIS) - The Indiana State Department of Health (ISDH) has named Hilari Sautbine the state registrar overseeing the Division of Vital Records, which is responsible for maintaining and issuing certified copies of birth, death and fetal death certificates for events that occurred in Indiana.

Sautbine has served as interim registrar since June. She has worked as an ISDH staff attorney since 2012 and had served as the agency's privacy officer responsible for ensuring compliance with the federal Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) since 2016.

"Hilari has a long history of holding ISDH to the highest of standards of customer service and confidentiality," said State Health Commissioner Kris Box, M.D., FACOG. "I am confident that Hoosiers and the information they hold dear are in good hands."

Sautbine holds a Bachelor of Science degree in biological sciences from Butler University, a Master of Public Health from Indiana University and a Doctor of Jurisprudence from the Indiana University School of Law-Indianapolis, now known as the Robert H. McKinney School of Law.

In addition to providing copies of birth and death certificates, the state registrar oversees the Indiana Adoption History Registry, as well as records involving paternity. The registrar also oversees training for Indiana's 93 local health departments, coroners, hospital records personnel, county clerks, physicians, funeral directors and local prosecuting attorneys in the proper procedures for completing and filing all vital records.

The Division of Vital Records officially began recording deaths in 1900, and birth recordings began in 1907. To learn more about the division or to request a vital record, visit https://www.in.gov/isdh/26754.htm.
