Indiana State Board of Education Continues Efforts to Study and Improve State's Accountability Rule

Last updated on Thursday, August 23, 2018

(INDIANAPOLIS) - The Indiana State Board of Education (Board) continued its work today evaluating Indiana’s Accountability Rule. The focus of today’s meeting was to determine in what ways the rule could be improved.

As part of this process, the Board will host up to four meetings in the coming months to meet with experts and allow board members to engage in an open dialogue. The Board is using Simplex, which utilizes an independent facilitator, to help focus and guide the discussion.

To assist the Board in its work, two national experts on state accountability systems were invited to present: Patricia Levesque, Chief Executive Officer for the Foundation for Excellence in Education (ExcelinEd) and Ryan Reyna, Director at Education Strategy Group (ESG). They are among the foremost experts on state accountability systems. Both experts provided the Board with information on accountability systems in other states, best practices, and ways the Board may improve the current accountability system.

"Today's meeting is an exciting opportunity for the Board to meet with the leading experts on school accountability systems," said BJ Watts, vice-chair of the Board. "I look forward to the upcoming board work groups and continuing to discuss ways to improve our state's accountability system. It's vital that our accountability rule remain student focused and accurately reflects the performance of Indiana schools.
