(PENDLETON) - Two crashes this morning had I-69 southbound blocked and rush hour traffic snarled and diverted off onto state roads.
Just before 8 a.m. the Madison County Sheriff's Department responded to an initial crash at the 123.6 mile marker that had the south bound lanes of I-69 blocked. Master Trooper Chris Noone arrived to assist, only to find a second crash had occurred in the stopped traffic.
Noone's preliminary investigation of the secondary crash shows that a Toyota RAV 4, driven by Teresa Eisenbise, 56, of Yorktown, was southbound on I-69 when it struck a Chevy Cobalt in the rear that was stopped for the initial crash. The Cobalt, driven by Jeremy Gonzalez, 23, of Anderson, was pushed forward from the impact into a vehicle involved in the first initial crash. After impact the Cobalt burst into flames, with Gonzalez escaping uninjured.
Eisenbise, the driver of the RAV 4, was transported to Community Hospital in Anderson with complaints of pain. The two crashes had both south bound lanes of I-69 blocked for two hours as crews worked to clear the scene.
Trooper Noone was assisted in his investigation by numerous troopers from the Pendleton District; The Madison County Sheriff's Department, Anderson Police Department, as well as the Anderson and Pendleton Fire Departments.
