Ex-Indiana First Lady Fighting Brain Cancer Sees Sons Enlist

Last updated on Monday, August 27, 2018

(INDIANAPOLIS) - Former Indiana first lady Susan Bayh watched as her twin sons took military oaths three months after undergoing surgery for the same type of malignant brain tumor that killed Sen. John McCain.

Susan Bayh wore an American flag baseball cap as she walked with her husband, former Indiana Gov. and U.S. Sen. Evan Bayh, at Saturday evening's ceremony in Indianapolis. She watched the enlistment ceremony for their 22-year-old Harvard graduate sons, Beau and Nick. Beau is joining the Marine Corps, while Nick enlisted in the Army.

Evan Bayh told the audience that his wife has "not once shed a tear" during her glioblastoma battle. Nick Bayh says his family was lucky that his mother faced a benign brain tumor in 2015 and he's proud of how she's facing the adversity.
